Hugo Perea
BBVA Research - Chief Economist
Hugo Perea is an economist with a MSc degree in Economics by the London School of Economics, UK. Hugo has also attended several courses and seminars at international institutions as the IMF, the World Bank and the Federal Reserve.
He joined BBVA Group in May 2004, and currently he is the Chief Economist at Peru for BBVA Research. Before joining BBVA, Hugo worked at the Central Bank of Peru for more than 11 years, and there he was the Head of the Departments of Analysis and Financial Programming and of Econometric Models, areas directly involved with the monetary policy design. Also, as part of his experience in the public sector, Hugo was a member of the Board of the Tax Administration Service from 2011 to 2014.
On the academic side, Hugo teaches courses on Macroeconomics, Monetary Theory and Financial Crises in the most important Peruvian universities and has published papers on these subjects.

Peru Economic Outlook. Second quarter 2020
Our forecasts have been revised to incorporate the macroeconomic impact on the Peruvian economy of the measures to contain the COVID-19 outbreak. As a result, we estimate that GDP will contract between 5% and 8% in 2020, with a downward bias. A significant rebound will take place next year.

Peru Economic Outlook. First quarter 2020
We expect output to grow by 3,1% in 2020, a forecast which is similar to the one we made in October, while in 2021 economic activity would grow by 3,5%. The main drivers will be the normalisation of primary activities (mining) and public spending, to which a stronger private spending will be added next year.
