After growing 1.9% in 2018, the economy of Extremadura could have grown by 1.8% in 2019. It will advance by 1.6% in 2020 and 2021, reducing the unemployment rate to 19.8% in 2021. The GDP of Extremadura would have grown by 2.6% in 2018, 0.5 p.p. above the growth of 2017, and is expected to increase by 2.4% in 2019 and 1.9% in 2020. This will add around thirteen thousand new jobs between the end of 2018 and 2020 and the unemployment rate shall drop to 21.2%, still 5.8 p.p. above the 2007 minimum.

The economy of Extremadura grew 2.4% in 2017 and will grow 2.7% in 2018 and 2.4% in 2019. This will add around 10,000 new jobs in the period and unemployment shall drop to 23,3%. Although pre-crisis GDP will be recovered, creating more and better jobs remains as a challenge.

The economy of Extremadura grew 2.0% in 2016, and will still grow 2.3% in 2017 and 2.4% in 2018, creating some 13,000 new jobs in those two years, although some external factors’ contribution shall slow down. Although pre-crisis per capita income will be reached, creating more and better jobs remain as challenges.

After an increase of 3.0% in 2015, the GDP of Extremadura will grow 2.3 and 2.5% in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The fall in the price of oil, the acceleration of the EMU, and the strength of internal demand shall drive growth. This scenario will enable the creation of 13,000 new jobs during this two-year period.

A range of factors have contributed to the acceleration in growth being enjoyed by Extremadura’s economy. First, internal demand has performed better over the last year, supported by an improvement in confidence and a reduction in fiscal tightening. Second, external demand once again made a positive contribution. For the future, the fundamentals account for the consolidation in the recovery because of greater-than-expected global growth, expansionary monetary policy in Europe with its attendant euro depreciation and, at the same time, the fall in the price of oil. Even so, there are persistent risk factors. Further afield, there are external geopolitical uncertainties; closer to home, in Europe and Spain, the complicated electoral calendar.
