Mexico | Remittances add 42-month streak with growth, increased 13.3% in September

Remittances accumulate an annual growth of 9.2% in the first 9 months of 2019, with an amount of 26,980 million USD. In September, unemployment rate in the US was 3.5%, the lowest rate observed in the last 50 years, since 1969. This condition drives the sending of remittances to Mexico.

Central America received more than 22 billion of US dollars in remittances in 2018. These resources are very important in El Salvador, where they equate to 21.4% of GDP; in Honduras, 20.0%; in Guatemala, 12.0%; in Nicaragua, 11.3%; and in Belize, 5.0%.

Mexico | Remittances to Mexico reach an all-time high of US$26.97 billion

In December 2016 remittances to Mexico amounted to US2,336.4 million, 6.2% more than in December 2015. Total remittances for 2016 reached an all-time high of US$26.97 billion, 8.8% more than in 2015 and surpassing the previous (2007) record of US$26.06 billion

It seems that the strong appreciation of the dollar against the peso continues to act as an incentive for sending remittances to Mexico. Our estimates indicate that remittances will continue their pronounced upward trend at least for the remainder of the first quarter of this year
