The estimates made by ECLAC, Coneval and BBVA Research are presented on the effect that the current crisis by Covid-19 can have on the increase in poverty and extreme poverty levels in Mexico in 2020.

Between 2008 and 2018, poverty in Mexico decreased from 44.4% to 41.9%, but increased in absolute terms, from 49.5 to 52.4 million people. In equity of income, measured by the Gini coefficient, Mexico would move from place 136 to 122 of a total of 164 countries, advancing 14 positions.

The number of Peruvians living in poverty increased to 6.9 million in 2017, an increase of 375,000 people, which meant that the monetary poverty rate increased by 1 pp to 21.7% of the population. The most likely cause is the weak expansion of formal activities that generate less productive jobs.

Appropriate the development of the Statistical Model to ensure historical comparability. The new ENIGH shows a decline in both poverty and extreme poverty compared to the year 2014; however, Mexico still faces important challenges in this area, since 43.6% and 7.6% of the population are in poverty and extreme poverty respectively.
