March's employment report marks only the beginning of a period of unprecedented weakening in the labor market. The number of people reporting being temporarily laid off doubled to 1.8M while the number of permanent job losers increased from 177K to 1.5M.

The GDP of Extremadura would have grown by 2.6% in 2018, 0.5 p.p. above the growth of 2017, and is expected to increase by 2.4% in 2019 and 1.9% in 2020. This will add around thirteen thousand new jobs between the end of 2018 and 2020 and the unemployment rate shall drop to 21.2%, still 5.8 p.p. above the 2007 minimum.

Since 2014, Spain has been growing at rates higher than those of most other European countries. During these years, Spain has recovered the competitiveness lost before the crisis. Inflation, unit labour costs and mark-ups have performed better than in the euro area as a whole, resulting in strong export growth. In 2017, exports were 35 per cent above the 2007 levels.

Labour market records showed a worse than expected development in August. BBVA Research estimates show that, after controlling for stationarity, the number of affiliates rose by 15 thousand people while unemploiyment was reduced by 34 thousand. Both numbers imply a slowdown in respect to those registered in the previous month.

Labour market records continued to have a positive trend in May, in line with what was expected. After controlling for stationarity, social security affiliation grew by around 40 thousand affiliates, the same number in which registered unemployment was reduced. The growth in employment continues to rely on the service sector.

The jobless rate increased slightly to 6.4% in April, above our expectation (a stable 6.3%) but below consensus (at 6.5%). The figure was driven by a 1.4% YoY rise in job-creation (mainly self-employment) as against the 1.6% YoY growth in the labour force. Overall, despite the low unemployment rate, the labour market still shows signs of increasing slack.

The rise in occupancy and the drop in active population reduced the unemployment rate to 20,9% in 4Q15. In all 2015, 525,1 thousand jobs were created and the unemployment rate dropped almost three percentage points down to 20,9%.
