Employment in the Spanish regions between 2013-2018: from an urban to a sectoral approach

Summary

The process of urbanization of employment continued during the recovery (2013-2018). Both the degree of initial urbanisation and the relative importance of tourism and the hotel industries conditioned its evolution. In addition, sectoral changes in cities could be having implications for inequality

Key points

  • Key points:
  • Those provinces where employment in the cities was already prevalent had a stronger recovery
  • In addition to the degree of urbanization, sectoral specialization also explains the differences in job creation. The regions with a higher importance of tourism and hotel industries had a particularly positive behaviour
  • Sectoral changes have taken place within cities, which could have increased inequality in large urban areas
  • In the future, the concentration of job creation in large urban areas could have implications on the type of skills demanded in the labour market
