Mexico | Yearbook of Migration and Remittances Mexico 2025

Summary

The Yearbook of Migration and Remittances Mexico 2025 analyzes global and regional migration dynamics. It highlights the drop in border apprehensions and forecasts a 5.8% reduction in remittances to Mexico for 2025, reaching 61 billion dollars amid new U.S. policies.

Key points

  • Key points:
  • U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions dropped drastically from 250,000 in December 2023 to just 6,000 in June 2025, evidencing an apparently sealed border for undocumented migrants.
  • Irregular transit of people through the Darien Gap almost completely stopped, going from 82,000 crossings in August 2023 to less than 200 in March 2025.
  • The third-generation population of Mexican origin in the United States registered the highest growth between 1994 and 2024, with an increase of 8.5 million people.
  • At the national level, remittances accounted for 3.5% of Mexico's GDP during 2024, with Chiapas (14.6%) and Guerrero (14.0%) being the states most dependent on these resources.
  • It is estimated that a 1% tax on remittances in 2026 would have little effect on Mexico, since 85% of Mexican migrants in the U.S. are banked and could avoid the levy.

In 2013, BBVA Foundation, BBVA Research, and the National Population Council (Conapo) shared the initiative to integrate, into a single publication, statistical and administrative information from specialized official sources, with the objective of facilitating the understanding of the phenomenon of migration and remittances at an international level, and especially in Mexico. The idea gave rise to the Mexico Migration and Remittances Yearbook, which reaches its thirteenth edition in 2025. Since its inception, the Yearbook has been distinguished by the use of reliable information, rigorous statistical techniques, and clear concepts, which allows the reader to consult, evaluate, and replicate the indicators presented. In this way, a reliable tool is offered for decision-making in the public and private sectors, as well as a valuable resource for academic studies, the work of civil organizations, and analysis by individuals interested in topics of mobility, migration, and remittances. The 2025 edition consists of eight chapters:

  • Human mobility in the world

  • International students

  • Immigrants in North America

  • Mexican population in the United States

  • Migrant children and adolescents

  • Safe, orderly, and regular migration

  • Migration from Mexico

  • Remittances

With the 2025 edition of the Mexico Migration and Remittances Yearbook, the three institutions reaffirm our commitment to generating reliable and accessible information on a crucial and constantly transforming phenomenon. We hope that this work continues to be an essential reference for those who seek to understand, analyze, and make decisions about migration processes in Mexico and the world.
